Canlac Farm Description
Following the success of Quintag Holdings in 1996-1997 the owners looked to expand their business and selected Canlac as a dry land farm for dairy conversion. The 341 hectare property was selected for it’s excellent shape, location, mix of soil types, low DDT levels, good access from the Waikato, being within 30 minutes from Christchurch airport, and available water. The attractions of Canterbury for dairying include access to amenities, the ease of farming flat land, the dryer climate which suits stock well, the irrigation in summer, the access to off farm grazing and alternative feeds, economies of scale, less mud, excellent pasture quality and the ability to convert the farm in the desired manner.
The farm has two central races with 28 paddocks split either side of the farm dairy . There is a 50 bail Nu Pulse Rotary farm dairy with a concrete platform. Irrigated by a centre pivot and Rotorainers from three bores (3,600-5,400 litres per min delivered) which provide approx 50mm water every 12 days (per well). Canlac has six full time staff. Paddock sizes are designed to provide 24 hour runs for irrigators and are 12 ha in size.
The farm was completely re-grassed in Aries, Embassy, Aran and Sustain and fertilised to optimal levels. The races are constructed in Canterbury using a grader to remove topsoil, grading up metal, then replacing soil in the trench, then topped with rotten rock and rolled.
Accommodation includes a modern 2 x 2 bedroom units with shared laundry with a four bay garage for all single staff.
Excellent modern three bedroom brick home with attached garage and lovely native easy care garden.
Canlac currently is 340 ha in size and calves 1,350 cows each season.
