Gethin Owens

Originally purchased as a 160ha operating dairy farm, Burmont Holdings Ltd has had a background of timely acquisitions to grow to the picture property it is today. Situated on the main highway just North of the Rakaia River, the Burmont farm is now finding its best use after capital improvements and infrastructure upgrades.

Burmont consists of 360ha utilised as a 310ha milking platform and 50ha support block which is capable of wintering 500 of the 1200 dairy cows.

In addition to necessary farm buildings, the property is complemented with five houses providing quality accommodation for staff.  All homes have been recently upgraded and meet the NZ Healthy Homes standards.

The predominantly Kiwi-cross herd are fitted with Allflex collars which monitor movement and rumination. This technology has been used to transition cows after calving in addition to heat detection and health alerts.

  •  Operational facilities include:

  • A 50-bail rotary dairy on the original herringbone site. Upgrades to this facility have been undertaken providing a modern and safe workplace with technology upgrades to meet the Group strategy to improve people and animal welfare standards.

  • ACR’s with auto in-bail teat sprayer.

  • Pro-track drafting facilities to manage the Allflex collar alerts.

  • Efficient effluent management system with solids separation through a vibrating screen to allow green water application to pasture via the pivot irrigators to 65% of the milking platform.

Burmont Holdings is fully irrigated with water supplied via Central Plains Water and deep wells. Irrigation is applied using a combination of pivots and two rotorainer irrigators.
